Mistakeningly downloaded new Windows Update

Moron issue: Went to Ms Windows Update and without thinking clicked on MS info to download the new Auto Windows Update program - NOTHING tells me until AFTER it's only for XP users - why the #!! did the stupid thing come up.
Now I cannot go back to the original Windows Update website, becuz the link changes and I have the Win XP auto updater in my Control Panel.( an NO it does not work on MS website)

I've googled searches on how to uninstall this I found this one paragraph in the MS for troubleshooting to manually start Windows update, does this sound like the solution of removing the windows update to get it back to normal??

Problem Description: Several problems on the Windows Update site can be caused by outdated or mismatched sitesoftware. To install updated software for Windows Update on all operating systems other than Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, please follow the instructions below.
For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:download our controls from http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...code/iuctl.cab and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below: 1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.2. Click "Open".3. Select all the files listed. 4. Right click on them and click "Extract."5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.5. Click "Install."

Any solutions for my moron issue?

Actually I found its called Windows Installed 3.1 finally in the add/Remove programs. Question now: If I delete this program, will I be able to go to Windows Update, or should I download the later Installer that used to work - I didn't know which installer I had before, but assumed it might be the Version 3.0 or earlier....

It doesn't remove....

Okay now I know I ruined my night - it doesn't remove from the Add/Remove program list, even though a box comes up saying it's removing it and cleaning it up from my system, after restart it's all back in the Control Panel.
Does anyone know whats up with this new Windows Installer Version 3.1 Updater??
Any override advice on how to rid of it??

Windows Installer 3.1 works fine on Win2000. That's different from the auto updater.

I'll take a stab here - look in Services for Windows auto update and disable it.

See if you can access http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Resolved

Thanks for reconfirming this works on Windows 2000. when I breifly looked in the help file of the Windows version 3.1, most of the sentences had XP in it with no mention of W2K.
I went back in to Windows Update link and it told me to re-download the Ver. 3.1 - when I did - it took about 30 sec (after I had originally spent 9min on our dial-up downloading it two night ago). After I re-booted and checked it online - everything worked flawlessly.

I will mention, if you do run into errors while online in MS windows update area - look for the LIGHT grey error code on right side of screen - it's easy to miss becuz on the main screen it bolds these dumb sentences that bluntly announce the process doesn't work and try the following.

Oh, and now we enter another "bubble" icon making your W2K look more like an XP ....can we change those ugly bubble icons, they look like M&M's.....
