xp unable to see anything but xp
hey everyone,
i'm trying to setup a new xp machine and install some shared printers, but the pc can't see any other machines unless they are also xp. currently, out network is a mix of windows 98, windows 2000 and windows xp, all of which log into a netware server. it's able to login to the server fine and it can access all the resources there, but that's the extent of my capabilities. some win98 machines have personal printers hooked up and shared, and i need this machine to print to a couple of those. the other xp machines found them fine and are working great, but this one is giving me a lot of trouble. does anyone have any ideas?

For file and print sharing on the Win98 have you changed the browse master setting?

should i change it even if the windows 98 machine is working fine?
i just switched it to enabled, and it doesn't appear to have had any effect. |

Hi homer15
I'd guess you might try adding a NetBios/NetBEUI protocol to the XP that's having trouble seeing the Win98 boxes, just for a quick fix try. Things are supposed to work without having to resort to this tactic, but - while not a perfect solution, it often works. My networking knowledge is still rather learning to walk, however - so I'm mostly guessing. Here's how to add NetBios/NetBEUI if you decide to try it: http://support.microsoft.com/default...301041&sd=tech . . . Gary [there might be some added network overhead by using NetBEUI - but if your network is a small one, it might not be too noticeable] |

firstly make sure that windows firewall isnt blocking these connections. Read the menus carefully because they are worded a bit ambiguousely and they always seem to use an extensive word when a diminutive one will surfice. Make sure they are of the same workgroup. i know it should be able to see all and connect to all but this can cause issues and its just easier to keep em all the same. 98 default is workgroup. xp default is mshome. These dont have to be the same to share internet access but do have to be the same to share files.
Keep us updated. Greg |
