Does anyone out there know how to get the icons out of the taskbar for programs that are running? I can't figure out how to get rid of them! Some programs have a setting in options to keep them off the taskbar, but alot don't, any suggestions?

Do you want to stop them from actually running in the background, or simply hide the tray icon?

What I am concerned about here is that those icons are consuming ram, I use windows XP and have 512 meg, but ram is like gold to me, and I conserve it whenever and wherever I can so my programs run more quickly. I don't even use a backround on my desktop. I know things like Mcafee have to run but that little icon is unnecessary and wasting ram but does not have an option to remove it from the taskbar. I also keep my desktop icons to about 4 to conserve ram. I guess what I want besides the taskbar is to conserve ram any way I can. I dont want unnecessary programs running in the backround unless they contribut directly to running the operating system. I only want them to run when I tell them to, and quit when I am done with them. I also have seemed to develop a new problem yesterday! whenever I hit ctrl alt del to check running processes I can only see the programs that are running, my cpu usage tab and the others have dissapeared. What's up with that. I wanted to copy and paste the processes running in the backround so I could show them to you. I recently changed sysconfig to stop some startup processes, could that have done it? Thanks guys for all your help and your excellent knowledge.

You have to differentiate between the taskbar and the systray. Which are you referring to?
To get the tabs back in task manager, double click the top border of the window. With the price of ram as cheap as it is now, you might just want to buy another 512 and slap it in. Compared to the footprint of McAfee just being there, the extra footprint of a simple icon is negligible - I think you are looking for needles in a haystack. |
