Strange problems with system functions, please help. Thanks.

I recently went thru the process of cleaning out my comp with HJT scans due to popups. Now the device mgr is not working, giving the error:
MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\devmgmt.msc.

Also it seems the search function for windows in not working either, saying that a file that is required to run search companion is missung and you may need to run setup???

Also Windows autoupdate is not working nor are any of the sytem defragmenter.

I feel these must be related. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Did you disable any services lately?

I believe the defragmenter is dependant on either one of the com or Dcom services (can't recall which one).

Oh and welcome to pcmech

No, I have not disabled any services. It seems to be a problem with the devmgmt.msc file that should be located in windows32. I do not see one there. Could it be possible a virus has gotten in and deleted that file?

I would try a repair with a windows cd, but my computer is a Dell with XP and they are not shipping them with the cd anymore.

Thanks for your welcome. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried a system restore, or did you disable it?

Thanks for the response. I tried a system restore, but when I did it the changes were still there and could not be undone.

If only I had the disk and could replace my devmgmt.msc file, maybe it would work. I do have it there, but it is causing the error.

The only other option I have is to call Dell and tell them that I need to reinstall my OS and see how they could help me.

Anybody else have any ideas?
Thanks

A reinstall is going to wipe the drive, so before you do that, back up your data files. I don't think a nondestructive repair reinstall is available with the Dell restore CD.

Yea, I was afraid of that. Well thanks for your help. I'll keep trying ways to fix this. The good thing is that at least my computer functions for the most part. I may be able to just continue to live with it. Thanks
