Sounds/Game freeze
I have recently encountered an issue while running racing sims where the lower bar (Start Menu) starts flashing on and off in a ghost like manner, kind of shaded and showing the application I'm running and the sound goes totally dead. The game keeps running but no sound.
Sometimes this last just a second or two and sometimes it stays in this mode and I have to turn off the compluter manually to get out of it. Control/Alt/Del. doesn't work, nor does the esc key. I think it is a program running in the background but have no idea which one or ones it may be that could be causing the problem. Also, when running any program such as entering this question, I get a flash of an unknown program button on the start bar. It scrolls across with no icon or address and goes away. Something else running ???? I saw somewhere on these boards in the past how to turn off programs in the start menu and which ones should NEVER be turned off. Could someone please point me in that direction? Thanks

I think I found the problem. I turned off a couple of things in the start menu and so far this evening all is ok. The OS is listed in my signature below.
