Open with box

I am trying to change a file to run always with media player, it works fine for one off but the box labelled (always use the selected programme to open this kind of file) is greyed out so not able to select it permantly. Anybody know how to ungrey it please?

Win Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types tab-> Edit the file extenstion in question.

I thought i had only looked at your recommendation in explorer but i dont know what i have done in that area but now instead of my files on my desktop opening to file direct it goes to the search page with the file that i have clicked on in the (look in box). How to i get back to opening direct?

I have since found out that just selecting that procedure and then coming out of it was the cause of my non opening of files on desktop. I got back to normal by using restore to an earlier date. Now all normal apart from original problem of greyed out box on always use this selected programme

Maybe some protection software Antispyware or Antivirus is blocking(greying out) access to that box try booting in Safe Mode and then choosing those settings!!!
