Currently applied this tweak on XP with 512Ram is there side effects with this tweak?
Coz my anti-virus running in the background aborts during scans
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl]
"Win32PrioritySeparation"=dword:00000026

What is the tweak supposed to do?

It's to give threads in the foreground more priority than those in the background. It's similar to that used in System properties > Advanced > Performance options > Advanced.
XP is designed to give you 2 settings of background or foreground (default); but this setting offers more control.

I hope you know what you're doing with the tweak rather than just applying some random settings that you read on a website. On a base system 512MB of RAM should be adequate, but if you are prone to running huge programs (fotoshop or some insane game) 512MB RAM turns out quite average (there is a huge difference between adequate and average when you are trying to tweak the settings to this extreme a number). Under these circumstances, you are going to get what you see. 26 (hex) / 38 (dec) is the maximum setting for concentrating on foreground threads, which means that your background threads are going to "die" out on you. Please go back and read the threads and text of any site that advocates this tweak, it calls for a MINIMUM of 512MB RAM, and the tweak is probably written c.2003.
By the way what IRQ are you giving priority to?
This is not meant in any way to dissuade you from running these tweaks, it is your prerogative to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your system. However, please make sure that you read the tweak and research it out meticulously.

Good read: http://mcpmag.com/columns/rss.asp?editorialsid=405 (scroll to advanced priority control) .. again written in 2002

i found this tweak on tweakhound.com the reason i used this tweak is to get faster performance on my xp. as far as i know, that's one of the few tweaks applied on my registry. i was questioning this tweak a whole lot since it's not documented as a popular tweak. i guess i just disable this for a time being until i get plenty more ram. i'm running much games. but like you said background threads could die. i'm not going to take a risk coz it might kill my anti virus thread running in the background. although using this tweak speeds up internet browsing. what then is a good tweak?
