trouble with downloads after sp2 install
I hope someone can help me with this. I used to be able to download photo stuff from the Epson printlabseries.com site but a while back I discovered that it would no longer work. The only thing I could think to trace it back to was installing the Win XP sp2. I know there are some added safety features and I tried to see what I could turn off temporarily to get the downloads. I turned off the Windows firewall and am using the Norton firewall. I listed the Epson site as an allowed site but still it just stalls. I've been able to download other things so I decided just to give up on the Epson site but the same thing happened yesterday when I tried to download some drivers off of the HP website. Does anyone know what settings I can look for to change? I don't get any message, it just doesn't do anything.
Thanks! |

Absolutely nothing. I hear a "click" when I click on the button to download, and then the hourglass will show up like it's trying to do something, but it never brings up the little window to ask me if I want to run the download or save it. It seems like it usually bottles up at that point too, and I often have to close the website because it is stuck trying to do the download. I have tried to right click on the download button and one of the options was to open in a new window. I did that to see what would happen and it opens a new window but nothing shows up in it. It's just a blank page.

Yes, I thought that was what it might be. But even when I turn off my pop-up blocker I can't get anything to go through. |

Go to the Options for Internet Explorer, security settings, click on default level, and drop the slider down to low. Now try the site out. If it works, then its a security restriction on IE that needs to be adjusted.

I have tried turning off Norton Internet Security (the whole thing) and the effect was the same. I downloaded the fix you gave me the link for and installed it, but it also was to no avail. I thought it would work too, based on its description. Puzzling! Thanks for the help, though. |

Try going to security setting in your internet options and putting those sites on the trusted sites list.

What sort of files are these? Do you need to download executables or are they activex controls. I would suggest downloading an alternative browser (like firefox: www.mozilla.org ) and trying to isolate out whether its the new security restrictions on IE or your connection itself that is preventing you from using the site. If you can download content using firefox then obviously all we need to do is to tweak out your security settings for IE. If not, we can look at connection/firewall settings.
