Quick Question...probably a stupid one
I purchased an intel based laptop about a year ago for school use and it came with XP proffessional...I have the disk for XP pro that came with the computer and I was planning on building an AMD Athlon 64 based desktop for gaming and such in the near future...
My question is is it legal to use the disk that i recieved with my laptop to install XP pro. on the new computer I plan to build? i will still be using my laptop as well, i dont know much about the legalities of things like this but i would appreciate any help |

Sorry. Microsoft only allows one install per license. You could install it but it won't activate and will stop working in 30 days. Cheaper to buy another copy of XP than an additional license.

Clear cut Illegal to do that, and with Xp activation you would run into difficulties anyways. Read the EULA, you know that thing everyone clicks yes to that have read and understand..

yes illegal to run it concurrently on two machines.
Cause I will say this after about 6 months the SN in question will easily be able to be used on another system. But I have only done that when it was off the machine it was on in the first place. So I do not know if they tie it in to updates and all that jazz. The only time I ever had trouble with activation is when I had to redo an installation after I added an additional piece of hardware and then redid the machine in the same 30 day period. I had to call and manually activate it. But I have never done this with any of my OEM stuff. Just the retail versions I have bought. So yes illegal. But if its off the other machine and it isn't OEM ?? ( not sure about that part) the worst you may have to do is call to activate it. Maybe I have been lucky but then again I was never violating any rules so to speak. |

OEM XP is only licensed to be used on the computer it shipped with. You might be able to get it installed and activated on a new computer, but that's illegal.
