Won't boot no matter what?
Today I came home, started up my trusty computer and voila! Windows XP has failed me again. It goes through the entire boot sequence, and after the Windows loading screen (where it usually does the disk check), it reboots. Does the same thing in safe mode, last known good configuration, whatever I use. Anyone know what's going on? Usually when Winblows screws up it's before the loading screen. Would something like chkdsk fix it? I'll go try it, as I've just gotten home... but any input would be awesome.

Post your complete system specs by brand and model. Include the brand of the power supply.
What have you done to troubleshoot this? Have you tested the RAM with a software tester like Memtest86+ yet? Do you have spare parts you can swap in to test with? Try booting up with the optical drives disconnected. Since the problem happens even in Safe Mode you probably aren't looking at a driver or software conflict causing the reboots. Cricket

Well, I couldn't find chkdsk, but here is my complete system.
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Albatron KX400+ Pro pqi Power series 512MB PC2700 Ram Maxtor 30GB HD Maxtor 17GB HD (disconnected) Sony CD-burner Dell DVD-Rom (disconnected) Powmax 480Watt Power Supply (I already know this one is on the fritz, but I'm 99.9% sure this isn't it). I guess I'll just reinstall Windows, since none of the safe mode options work and I think the reason why is a corrupt version of Windows XP. I cannot find nor execute chkdsk, or any other diagnostics program. The hard drive is fine, I can use a startup disk to reach the command prompt and it's all fine. Any suggestions on what else it would be? Could it be that I removed the second hard drive? It did it the first time and I pulled it out, but it didn't help. |

I switched the ram with a 256MB Crucial stick and it did the same thing, so it isn't the ram. Does anyone know of a diagnostics tool I can use from the command prompt that will help me out?

Did you try running chkdsk /f from the command prompt?

Boot with the XP CD, use the recovery console. You can run chkdsk /r from there. You could also make a Powermax floppy, boot with it, and test your hard drive.
