XP appears confused...

Hi guys

Got a random XP issue that appears to have arisen on its own! When I now go through the shutdown process, XP restarts! The only way i can now shutdown is to restart and to use the power switch before the memory check.

Very confused at this one, it seems to have occured randomly; haven't made any system changes before it started misbehaving.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jez

thanks for the reply. Followed the instructions on stopping windows from automaticall restarting. When doing this, I now get the blue screen error on shutdown "Driver_Power_State_Failure". Have never seen this before so cueless as to a fix. Tried a system restore but because of problems shutting down, it doesnt appear to work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try the solution at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315249&sd=RMVP and see if it identifies a driver causing a problem. Have you installed a new antivirus or firewall recently? You might also want to try running a spyware scan to see if anything nasty has installed itself as a driver and is causing problems.

Problem solved, thanks for the links guys. Norton Ghost was the culprit, still a tad confused as to why my computer took a random dislike to it. Can anyone recommend a good alternative backup programme?
