Formatting C: when using Win XP
I'm about to clean out a lot of crap that I have om my computer and so I decided to format my C: drive and reinstall Win Xp pro. But how can C: be formatted? A system drive cannot be formatted in Win Xp so I rebooted my computer and put my Win XP-disc in my DVD player, but instead of getting to the Win XP installation menu (where I recall that C: can be formatted prior to installation) the computer used the CD to boot Windows. Do I have to use a good old fashioned bootdisk?

You are on the right trac, but I don't think your PC actually booted from the CD, because that IS what you want to do, you could even choose the repair console and from there you'll be able to format C:

It's an option you get when booting from XP CD, it takes you to basically a command prompt type environment whare theyre are a whole host of commands available to repair XP.

Ok, I've figured out what is wrong now; it appears that because I have a cordless keyboard it does not respond when i press down a key when the "press down a key too boot from the CD"-text appears. That is really annoying. I shouldn't have got rid of my old keyboard...

Yup... me and a few friends have found the repair console doesn't cut the mustard. Definitely just start afresh

All I was trying to point out is that you CAN format C: from the repair console, but your right you then would have to reboot to CDROM and go to installation so you might as well just go the installation route in the first place..

just a word of advice, when you format dont forget the /s (that is if you dont have a boot disk)
/S is the attribute that should be used with the FORMAT command to create a self-booting diskette. |

You simply set your first boot device to your CDROM, boot with the XP disc and XP will format & partition your drive. It's very simple. trulad Dark Nova View Public Profile Send a private message to Dark Nova Send email to Dark Nova Find More Posts by Dark Nova Add Dark Nova to Your Buddy List
