My D drive disappeared

Earlier today I could access my D drive. All of a sudden a window pops up asking me if I want to format something or other....... I clicked "No" .
When I tried to save something on my D drive it wasn't there ! I went to my computer + it wasn't there ! I did a system restore for 1 wk ago + nothing. I am very primitive at this computer stuff. Does anyone know how I can do this simple step by step ? I have all my paintshop pro stuff on this drive. Windows XP rabbitstu2@yahoo.com ty

Does the drive show up in the detected HD's on bootup? (The POST screen)
Have you gone into the BIOS to see if it is set to auto-detect the drives?

splat ty CodeRed

I phoned the repair shop to get an estimate on what it would cost me for them to fix it. Was cheap enough so we took it in. On the day I lost my drive, we had our internet provider come over to check out our net hookups + 1 of our computers said that there was a minimal amt of power going thru to them. He replaced the cable (I was playing a computer game then (couldn't get hooked up to net then) According to the pc repairman, when that net hookup was replaced, it sent a power surge to my computer + fried my D drive ! Who would've thought that you should have your computer shut down while they are doing this I had access to D prior to cable guy doing his fix up. Thank you for trying to help me out. I appreciate it. Too bad it could't be fixed your way.
