I have a friend that has corrupted her computer somehow! She says she deleted the windows 98 sytem to the recycle bin. I dont know how, then she tried to install Windows 95 over the top. When I boot it up it starts to install the system, then I get alot of messages that say things like
C:\>C:\Windows odihlp.exe Bad command or file name C:\>WIMEM.Sys is missing Make sure that the file is in your windows directory. Etc. Etc. I want to reinstall 98 on the computer but I am not sure where to start. I tried a startup floppy disk from my other windows 98 computer to no avail. I inserted the windows 98 installation cd rom but it is not picking it up either. After all of the missing files are listed I end up with C:\> What can I type in to get it to recognize the floppy or CD rom? Never ran into something like this! Help Please.

When you are at the C
rompt, type D: after which you should get D:\> then type "setup" without the quotation marks. That worked for me once. trulad

Please wait while setup initializes. Scanning system registry Win It starts to read the cd-rom then goes to C drive and hangs there! Now What?

I think I have the solution to the problem, or part of it. Windows 98 needs 7340032 bytes available and my drive has 6150 megbytes on it. Thus 6150 times 104856 bytes per meg = 63962160 if these figures are correct the drive does not have enough space for Windows 98. Correct? I am going to try to install Windows 95, maybe that will work?
What do you guys think? And will I be able to install from the 98 startup Disk? Last edited by hlp45777; 08-05-2005 at 06:26 AM. Reason: Addition |

Usually the case or cover that the windows cdrom is in, look for on orange sticker with a series of numbers and characters..

That exact error (Windows 98 needs 7340032 bytes) is due to a nonstandard partition structure. The only way I've been able to clear that up is with a zero fill, then repartitioning with FDISK, not a 3rd party partitioning tool.

Your 98 will take about 1/2 gb of the 6gb you have available.
A better way might be to set the CDROM to be the 1st boot device in CMOS, boot and install from there on a hard drive with no partitions defined. The 98 will create the required partition and format the drive in 2 steps with a reboot in between. 95a will take a lot less but will go onto a FAT16 partition which is limited to a smaller partition. |
