Windows XP installion error

I recently started upgrading my older home computer and reformatted my Maxtor 40 gb HD. After formating the disk, I attempted to install Windows XP. After booting XP from the cd, it loads normally and then I try to begin installing it. At this point, it says that no Harddrive is detected, its as if XP can't recognize my HD, although it is recognized in the BIOS. What could be causing this problem, and how can I fix it?
