Hi Ben

Try making sure that Windows Explorer is set to "show hidden files and folders" and also that it does not "hide extensions for know file types" [Right-click your Start button, select "Explore","Tools", "Folder Options", "View" - and scroll down to "show hidden..." and place a mark in that circle, then remove any checkmark from the box in front of "hide extensions...". --> and click OK when you're done.

Then restart your computer, and press the F8 key to pause the startup at the startup menu, and choose "Safe Mode".

See if you can now empty your Recycle Bin.

If you get a "file in use" error, or another "access denied", let us know.

If you have antivirus/antispyware tools, make sure they're updated and run a few scans with the most thorough settings they allow. Might run a few scans from Safe Mode, too = while this can be slower, it can be effective.

Not sure about a file "dc40" --- the only dc40 I've heard of is a camera from Kodak.

Best of luck

late edit --- Well, I did a little homework, and it seems you may be experiencing one of those "known issues"! Take a look at this Kelly's Korner article & see if it helps http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rb --- you'll have to scroll down to the (rather lengthy!) section beginning with "Recycle Bin - Deleting Problems" ... that Kelly's Korner article might well be called "Everything you ever wanted to know about the Recycle Bin"!

looks like the dc40 might reference the number of incompletely deleted files
