Question What would be my problems if.....

Hey, all you PCM guru's, what would the result be if I took an older Dell laptop that originally came with Win98se installed and reformatted NTFS and installed Win2K Pro on it? I figure that my power management for the battery might be gone, but the battery is FUBAR anyway and the guy who owns it didn't like the cost estimates for a generic battery purchase anyway. So what should I expect the problems to be? Wouldn't Win2K detect hardware and all? Can you download specific drivers from Dell if you have no support for the new OS load? All input is appreciated. THX

If the laptop originally came with 98SE, then it should be new enough that Windows 2000 will support all the equipment but old enough that 2000 will also have all the drivers. So it should be a trouble-free installation.

Great, thanks much! I will let ya know how it goes. Now to break it to the guy that I will have to have something out of my Win2K Pro OS! After all I am not a bona fide charity! What would be a fair price for the Win2K OS Disk, manual and box?

Last time I checked, Windows 2000 was going for around $55-60 on eBay, so I'd say something around that. Well worth it to upgrade from 98SE, IMO.

Deleted existing FAT32 partition and formatted NTFS, install went smooth as butter. I haven't had a chance to locate a proggie to test the M$oft drivers on the Toshiba DVD-Rom drive yet, but all seems good so far. Hey, if you don't have a DVD player, will Windows media player play DVD files? Never used it for DVD playback, but I'm guessing that would be no problem.

You actually need an MPEG-2 codec. The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack has that along with three million other codecs.

Bought a new retail copy of Power DVD 6.0 off EBay for 20 bucks shipped. That should do it, I think. Everything else on this laptop seems to be ready to go.
