First thing you'll want to do is to zero-fill the hard drive. You can do that with KillDisk.

Then you FDISK & FORMAT. You have to run FDISK first to create the partition and then you run FORMAT to format the partition.

If you need a bootdisk, go to BootDisk.com.

Dont forget, when your formatting you type format c:/s

The "/s" makes the drive a bootable drive by copying the file command.com
to C: at the end of the procedure.

You can, but the RECOMMENDED way is from DOS with a bootdisk.

If you are going to use Windows 2000, you can do everything you need by booting with the Windows 2000 CD. Setup will allow you to remove all partitions and create a new one.

On MS-dos 6.22 how can I get it to reach c:\> instead of a:\> so that I can format my drive. I would also like to know if killdisk is really necessary because I can't get it to run and there is nothing on my harddrive anyway

You type format c: at the A prompt. Format.com must be on the bootdisk. It cannot format a FAT32 drive, only a FAT16.

I repeat, if you want to install Windows 2000, you do everything from the CD. Please read the link I provided.
