splat Windows Xp wont update

I have windows xp home edition with service pack 1 installed, i can't get the windows to update. Whenever i try to go to the updater website the computer will lock up and i will have to use contol alt delete, and sometimes that doesnt even work any one maybe know the problem? Thanks!

Heres the computers specs if it helps:
Gateway Intel Pentium 4 3.00ghz
496mb ram
Microsoft xp Home w/ service pack 1 (service [pack2 does not work with this machine)

What other programs are running in background when you try to run the updater? Have you tried turning them all off before you run the updater?

Are you using a software firewall other than the one built into Windows?
