Wierd Problem on XP Home edition

I went to my internet gateway PC after applying the most recent Microsoft updates on all three network PC's. The other two are running XP Pro. Anyway I went and there was no start bar whatsoever! I broght up task manager and cpu useage was spiking to 100% and then back down over and over, not always reaching max cpu utilization. I have done just a system reset and hardbooted. Sometimes no desktop icons will load at all, system just reains at my desktop background and stays there. I do have mouse functionality when this is the case, but nothing to click! I can go into Safe Mode ok and I have set for a diagnostic startup and all seems ok, normal startup is not ok. I tried a couple of restore points but they did not go smoothly. I now get to my desktop and my desktop icons load, but When I try to do a Start>anything all I get is an hourglass that never goes away. Task manager shows way high cpu utilization. Have ended process on what seem to be the offending processes, but nothing has helped. I did try a boot from system CD but after three attempts at remembering the admin password, it won't let me retry. BUMMER. Any ideas? I cannot get online with this machine either.

Nobody has heard of a virus or anything with the Taskbar disappearing , huh? I can't even run my AV or spyware, check email or get a browser to open. Things are getting wierd. I am going to replace this PC with another and hope my backups were current.

Saw this didn't know if it would help you.

Also there is a way of changing the admin password when you forget it try this it works real well.

Change Account Password without Old Password

With Windows XP, you can change an account password without knowing the original password. I should mention that this information could be used to get yourself out of a jam, but also for bad by those shady enough to do it. In Windows XP, go to yoru command prompt and type the following command:

net users Administrator *

or for a username with spaces:

net users "Bob Smith" *

From there, it should ask you for a new password. You can enter it, but pay attention to what you type because the letters will not output to the screen. Confirm your password choice. When done, it will tell you that you were successful.

Maybe it might help you.
