Hi I am new here and this seems to be the greatest website for pc help.
So here I am HELP!!! I bought a clean but used athlon running windows 2000 professional for my son. I am using windows ME . OK so I bring it home and begin looking into the system (checking it out) and notice that there is an Administrative log on. So I decide to dig a little further and put my sons name there, I am quite sure I never had the set password option. So I set it up in his room with a bow for his birthday and It wont load past this log on screen that says " unidentified user/ check name and password/ log on denied" End of story no further options .What I need to know is How the HAY can I get a command prompt so I can maybe re-run setup? Being that with the sale of the computer I was given the product code for win 2000 professional. But not the software cd. itself. I have no start up disk for win 2000 or software. I do have Win ME. Can I install ME from the CD or should I try the ME startup floppy. or does anyone know how I can get the command prompt on Windows 2000 pro. ??? Or any ideas or comments on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kozy

For you Login in problem, you can fix that. First open your pc.
As you might know, an onboard system battery (on most modern motherboards, this battery is a round, thin, lithium-cell battery) backs up CMOS memory. To clear CMOS memory, disconnect the AC power from the system's power supply, then disconnect the backup battery on the motherboard (you can usually just pop out the battery). Wait 10 to 15 minutes, then try booting the system again. The system should boot normally, with factory-default CMOS settings. If the system won't boot, wait another 10 to 15 minutes and try again; keep repeating the process until the system boots. Some systems can take as long as 1 to 2 hours after you disconnect the battery to clear, but in most cases one or two cycles does the trick. |

Your kidding me ? I have tried just about everything but that. I thought the battery's main purpose was keeping time. Learn something new everyday.
Thank you SO much for your reply. This is a great site in the 2 days its taken to solve my dilema I have also learned how to rebuild an entire system. Thanks Again. Kozy |

The CMOS memory has NOTHING to do with Windows 2000 logon.
You have to log on as Administrator (hopefully they left the password blank or you know the password) and use Users and Passwords in Control Panel to add your son as a user. Or you can just let him log on as Administrator - if it's not Internet connected there's no security risk doing this. |

Well 2 days of unplugging the power cord and popping the batery and it is official it didnt help. I should have come back sooner to read the reply's . This is crazy! But I did learn how to get into the cmos which was helpful too.
BUT.. It doesnt give me the administrator log on option just the ever so familiar user log on denial. Before I changed it the admin. password was blank but now It doesnt even come up. So..... IS There a way to get to the command prompt? I have tried every option available from the setup screen (f8 at boot) and still the same outcome. user denial. Question: If I set the boot sequence to read the cdrom first can I put in windows ME and have it read it and hopefully run setup? And should I change the jumpers too? I think I now understand the purpose of windows proffessional........... ANY ANSWERS OR IDEAS ARE WELCOME. KOZY |

You can try and run windows ME setup it dosent cost you nothing exept time!!! But you don't have to change jumper settings for that !!!

Are you saying that it doesn't even stop at a login screen?
