I can't find definitive specs, but I think that's a 800x600 screen. Make sure the monitor is set to be a 800x600 laptop display panel and the resolution is set to 800x600 in display properties.

Cheers but Ive tried that and theres no difference. I'm wondering if I need a onboard bus driver for this laptop. Its got me stumped.. A friend was given this machine to use whilst abroad but no drivers.

you have the "black border syndrome". on my dell laptop the fn and f7 keys alter the size of the font/screensize at the bios screen. most os reinstalls set the size to 800x600, i press this key combo to reach the LCD native resolution of 1600x1200. seems that this is independant of the video driver, and the os used.
