Should I switch?
I've been using Win 2K for the past 4 years (20 months since I last re-installed) and I must say it's been good to me, particularly after the pain of Win ME. However, I'm planning on formatting soon and I am somewhat tempted to switch to Win XP pro. But, is it worth it? What is to be gained and which are the potential losses?

Win 2K and Win XP are both based on the same kernel, so there isn't much difference in terms of how it works. With XP, you are going to get more support for games, but if that's not important to you, then switching is really a matter of personal preference. There is no reason not to use 2K, it works quite well.

I have to agree that Win2K is just fine, I have it on one of my boxes. XP has a prettier GUI and some features like Scanner and Camera Wizard that I like. In fact, I ended taking off the software that came with my digital camera because XP's handling of Photos was simpler and better. XP has a lot of multimedia support that Win 2K doesn't, 2K was intended to be for business workstations, so extras are limited.

You probably wouldn't need XP Pro though. XP Home will probably work fine for you. Help Me Choose. I would say that generally there isn't a big reason to upgrade unless you want better driver support, more multimedia features, eye candy, etc. XP runs a little more smoother than 2K but takes a bit more HP to run.

I do use it a lot for gaming and such. I am somewhat concerned that Microsoft could start offering their updates (particularly DirectX) only to win Xp users. Also, can I remove MSN messenger from win XP? I've always found it annoying and it's been one of the reasons I haven't upgraded.

If you are concerned about future support for gaming, then it would make sense to switch from 2K to XP. And yes, you can remove MSN messenger from XP; it's one of the first things I do. Simply paste this into the Start...Run box:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove |
