new xp over old

I have just picked up a second hand pc which appears to have a pirate xp operating system with sp2. I have a pukka xp I would like to use, can I install over the old xp without reformat? How would I change the produst key? Many thanks in advance,

I believe you should be able to do a repair install of XP, using the licenced software, without erasing the data. Course, you could just format and reinstall if you dont need to keep anything

I'm not discussing pirate software, I have a shop bought 100% legal version of xp I want to install on a computer, that I picked up at a car boot for peanuts, that appears to have a pirate version on it. I just dont want to reformat the HD.

how can you tell that the software is pirated software, i just realized that i have no idea how to check that besides inputting your Windows Certificate of Authenticity and running it in the Windows Genuine Advantage program.
