XP Install problem

My old computer that i would like to get running again so i took a look at the specs:

Pentium 3 550MHz
GeForce4 MX420 64 meg video card
256 MD DDR SDRAM
standard cd-rom/cd-burner, floppy drive, and a new edition to help it run:

Maxtor IDE 133 40Gig Hard drive

I grabbed my Windows XP disk and put it in. I booted from the CD and ran through the whole setup proccess.(Formating the drive NTFS, loading all the setup files) Then restarting to load windows from teh hard drive to do the actual installing. When it gets to the hard drive booting part it shows teh loading screen for Windows XP with the bar moving to the right like normal, then when the screen switches the monitor gets no signal and the ccomputer hangs there for a while and does nothing.

i've restarted multiple times and changed the Hard drives jumper settings, ide cable location, power to the hard drive, etc. and still the same thing. It even shows the computer detecting the hard drive with no errors at the memory test screen.

my question is, whats causing this? is it the video card not loading the screen? (ive even went out of my way to make an unattended setup disc to see if it would eventually install and still nothing) Or is it the Hard drive not working properly?

any Information, links, etc. would be greater appreciated.

As glc suggests, memory is the first culprit to check out. Also, do you have any peripheral devices plugged in? Like printers, scanners or any other usb devices? If so, unplug them during the install.

Just looked at your memory listing. Don't think it's DDR in a PIII mobo. Most likely PC100 or PC133. Is the 256Mb in one stick or multiple sticks? Need to make sure your mobo/memory configuration is correct.
