win 2000 problem

hello,
this guy, i'm helping, is having a problem with his PC. It's a PC he got from his friend, running win 2000. Now when PC boots up he has only wallpaer - no icons or taskbar. Looks like something to do with explorer.exe file? Unfortunatelly the guy doen't have 2000 disk to reinstall windows. What would be the least painful way out? That's all info i have right now. I'll know more tomorrow. Thank you.

There is most likely nothing wrong with the computer.

Right click anywhere on the desktop and choose Active Desktop. That will open a small second menu, then left click on "Hide All Icons" and the icons should show back up.

Next move the mouse down to the bottom of the screen. Try to drag the cursor off the bottom of the screen and the task bar should show up. It's in auto hide mode. To change that just right click on the task bar when it appears, choose Properties and then uncheck the box next to Auto Hide.

Edit: That should be "click on Show All Icons".
