Laptop rebuild - how best to wipe drive
I am planning to rebuild my HP Omnibook laptop with W2K. It has Win98 and several aborted W2Ks on it. I need to clean the C-drive. How best should I do this? How best should I back up the Win98 set up in case the new build doesn't work?

The best way is just boot with the Win2K CD and start Setup. When prompted for where to install it, remove all partitions, then install in the unallocated space. It will then ask you to create a new partition, follow the prompts.
There is no backing up or going back if you do this. |

I finally got round to doing as suggested. But having done the W2K build. The computer freezes after a minute - once its fully booted. The mouse stops responding. Sometimes pressing the little button which deactivates the laptop's screen when it is closed will wake the mouse again, but this doesn't last. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't even work. Only the shutdown button works.
I've tried starting in safe mode, but it won't even load in that. There was an "unknown" partition on the hard drive - should I have deleted that as well as the FAT32 one? It's an HP4150. It says its "Designed for 98 and NT". Will I have to start again and install 98? Or have I done something dumb? D |

I'm not answering your question but it's a related question. How different is wiping a laptop from a desktop? I've worked primarily with desktop machines and have wiped a lot of them. Are laptops that much different?

Could anything important be on that unknown partition that I should save? What would it have been there for? It's around 580Mb I recall.

So should I dig out the HP Win98 recovery disk? Or should I delete the partition and reinstall W2k?
It's just my mobile phone seems to need the latest Nokia software, which needs W2K, to communicate via infrared with the laptop. D |

boot to the win2k cd, delete the current partition, create a new ntfs partition, start formating and reinstall windows.
