xp pro boot latency, extra loading after desktops on

hi im using xp pro and i have a very odd boot latency, everythings fine till i get to my desktop, it loads it quickly enouph and then i have to stare at my desktop for about 1-2 more mins, during this time i cannot dial my dsl noir access my computer, though i can go through other folders just fine as long as their on my desktop, my connection will only let me disconnect while this is happening, then it switches over to connect when it finally initializes, its very odd and i know its not supposed to be this way, i know the possibilities are endless as to what this could be but im just curious if anyone else had any remotely similiar problems that they have fixed?...if i could fix this without formatting it'd be nice, its not annoying enouph to format but its quite bothersome after awhile

my comps on a sis 748 gigabyte mobo, 333mhz bus, 1 gig of 2700 ddr, radeon 9200 vid, 40 gig western digital on ide internal 7200 ata 100 i think, sound blaster live card, sbc non static dsl through a cheapo speed stream (5650 model i believe), xp pro

OK check to see if your adaptor is trying to 'obtain an IP address automatically'. You can check this by right clicking on 'my network places' and clicking properties. Highlight the network adaptor that is connected to your modem. If you have only one network adaptor, this will be 'local area connection.' Right click and select 'properties'. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click 'properties.'

Is 'obtain an IP address automatically' ticked?

If it is, then tick the 'use the following IP address' box, and enter 192.168.5.(any number between 1 and 255) in the 'IP address:' field, and then in the 'Subnet mask:' field enter 255.255.255.0, click OK and restart your computer to see if it worked!

good call, this actually was right on and fixed the latency i was talking about suprisingly, but some of my programs relying on my connection started acting funny so i had to switch it back for the moment, not sure why their being weird, i use direct connect and once i set my settings like that it wouldnt let any downloads start, though i can connect to hubs and search normally ....thx for the tip though, it seemed to do the trick and most everything else is still perfectly fine, i can browse and download from most all other mediums without problem, i think its because dc wants you to put your ip address into the prog since its primarily aimed at static ip's and im guessing its reading the ip i put into the windows config and thats where its running into a problem -_-....oh well, its just to bad because i use dc a hell of alot =/...i suppose i could manually put my ip in everytime i use dc thx again for the tip...im really suprised it worked lol

LOL I'm actually having the same problem as you on my connection; got a new ADSL router and I can't get the ports/IP's to work. For you, try going here and entering the IP it gives you into the IP field.

The problem is that that IP address is most probably going to be your DSL (router?) modem's IP as the outside world sees it. If your router isn't properly configured (like mine ) then the router won't know where to send the data being sent to it, so you need to set it up to send the data coming through the UDP and TCP ports to your private IP address (192.168.5.whatever).

I really wish I knew what I was talking about.
