I had two computers compaq one had a fried HD the other worked fine after i cleaned it up. I took the memory from the system with the fried HD and put it in the working system. When i restarted it goes to windows logo screen then says it is now safe to turn of your system and hangs there. I removed the memory i put in from old system. I am still getting same message at startup. I dont have the restore cd's that came with these systems how can I correct what ever happened? If i go to c prompt i can see all my files are still on the system. any help?

At a command prompt, type:
scanreg /restore and restore a previous registry that worked. You might also want to run Scandisk from a command prompt. |

Have a look here.
Once you get your system going again, add the following lines to the end of your c:\windows\scanreg.ini file; Files=30,config.sys,autoexec.bat,io.sys,msdos.sys Files=11,vmm32.vxd This adds additional startup files to the normal windows registry backup procedure. It also adds the dreaded VMM32.VXD file, which when lost, means a reinstall "over the top" of the existing windows installation. Normally, a "scanreg/restore" won't cure a system with this file missing. Now it will.
