welcome screen gone, classic logon will not go away
ok this is driving me nuts again!
basically i cant get the welcome screen to display. XP keeps booting up into classic logon where by you have to type in your name to access the accounts. there is no password on this system that i know of. when i log off or switch user the classic logon comes up and says "the computer is locked only the administrator can unlock" its not just the "tick use welcome screen" in user accounts. it is not just untick "prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" this is something to do with domains and my network and XP pre SP1 i'm sure. this is a more complex problem that i have come accross before and the only way i could solve it was to reformat and reinstall windows with SP1 already on the disc.if i try to install XP(no SP1) and try to update to SP1 as soon as i connecto to my LAN this problem starts. i am going to contact MS directly about this but anyone who has an answer please post. i have searched google and tried a couple of reg hacks but they didnt work. im going to try safe mode and the admin account and select welcome screen, but if that doesnt work im stumped please help

Is the user name on the login Administrator? If not, might change it to admin and login.

If you're using XP Pro and during initial setup you tell it you're on a Domain, what you describe can happen. Have you looked in System Properties>Computer Name tab to see if you're showing belonging to a Domain? Check this out.

I happened to come across this on google and I just had this happen to my roomate (he also had a program due for class in two hours). Just like panama said, it was after he joined a domain. After joining all of his accounts were locked including the administrator account. The way I found that was a way to fix it was to use a linux password/account reset bootdisk. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
It has an option to unlock locked accounts, be careful when using it although, its a powerful tool ![]() I know that this is an old post but I figure I might as well answer it so other people who search for solutions will have it. |

to update this post i think someone has a fix for this, finally.
google search term: bcmlogon.dll lost fast user switching Smoother wrote: Computers are just supposed to work, grrrr! Today I got this error: A recently installed program has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall the program. The following file name might help you identify the program that made the change: C:\WINDOWS\system32\BCMLogon.dll I couldn’t switch the logon screen, and I couldn’t access the internet. I ran to another PC and found the solution to this problem. To resolve the problem and restore the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching, you need to reset the GinaDLL entry using these steps: * Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT * Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon * Backup the key by exporting to a file. * In the right pane, right-click GinaDLL, and then click Delete. (You need to remove the whole value, not just its Value Data) * Close Registry Editor it worked for me, but this time when i pressed Ctrl Alt delete to access the admin account on my laptop in welcome screen this is what solved getting the welcome screen back. It might apply to others using or losing the welcome screen. HTH and ill be back... |
