How can I verify my spec?

I have bought a computer which claims to have 1024MB of RAM.

Does anyone know how I can actually verify that it has this without opening it up??

I know you can go into System in the control panel and down the bottom it tells you some of the spec. However this is something the guy who built it has typed in so in theory he could've put anything he wanted.

Is there any simple way to check it has 1024MB RAM?

thanks

When you turn the computer on, the very first thing you'll see is the RAM test. If it shows 1024 MB, then you have 1024 MB.

If you don't see the RAM test, then you probably have a fullscreen logo activated. Usually at the bottom you will find infos like "Press ESC to see POST screen", then press that button (usually ESC) to see the POST screen.

To add to RJ's solution, I recommend the excellent 'Everest Home Edition'. (www.lavalys.com) It allows you to browse your system specs at leisure, as well as check your system temperatures.

Where does everest have the system temperature options?

Anyway, what's wrong with just right-clicking "my computer" and looking at the "general" tab (or going through the control panel)? Can anyone write anything so it appears there? how?

Everest lists your system temps as the 'sensor' sub menu, underneath 'summary'.

Although you can find basic specs from where you say, Peekaboo, i much prefer the advanced ones everest gives you. I do believe its possible to edit what is displayed under 'my computer', although I don't know how it's done.

Open up My Computer and then on the left click on View System Information, your ram amount will be there at the bottom.

Google for Sisift Ssandra, that will tell you much more too, http://www.sisoftware.net/

the only time i've ever seen a 'customized' system info tab is with OEM software from the likes of Dell, HP etc. never seen it from small system builders; would be nice to know how to alter it for personal/business use.

belaric or everest are the easier options and allows u to print of reports - useful if u've been mis-sold a PC and need to report him to trading standards.

on a sidenote doesn't dxdiag give the same (and more) info as systeminfo with the added bonus of workin for both flavours of XP?

Sometimes that is information is incorrect when onboard graphics are used; Windows/Bios marks it as used and therefore doesn't include it in system summary.
