Hotbar alternatives for the hotbar obsessed PA
One of the secretaries at my place of employment can't get enough of Hotbar. For her, I pretend like it isn't the piece of spyware that it is because it makes her happy.
However, with office 2003, and XP SP2 hotbar's functionality is severely crippled. I can't quite get all of the emoticons and templates to work.... Do you guys know any alternatives that are EXTREMELY easy to use and have all the cute crap that Hotbar has? |

Could you be a little more descriptive on what functionality you are looking for? I don't know much about Hotbar, but a little research seems to show that it is nothing more than spyware with evil emoticons. Is there anything else to it?

Do you know that Hotbar also adds a footer to all of your outgoing emails advertising itself with a link to where others can
She must be pretty cute if you are willing to put up with Hotbar.

it's more that the administration doesn't want to hear an explanation about spyware, or security, viruses, performance, etc... they just want me to make the professors happy.... "get it done" "dont tell me how" "make them happy"

I give my users more leeway than I should in a lot of circumstances, but when it comes to this stuff, it's simply not allowed. I don't know of anybody who appreciates getting those annoying emoticons in e-mail, and I don't know of anybody who appreciates links inviting the installation of spyware either.
Frankly, even if the administration doesn't want to hear about security and spyware, they have to. Crap like this is an open door to your network, no matter how benign it appears to be. She will just have to learn to make smileys like this: :) However, if you really want to avoid messy explanations, just do what I do. Say, "I'm sorry, but this software is incompatible with the latest version of Windows and Office. It won't work." Hey, sometimes it's a lie, but what can you do? |
