Hi..
I have Windows XP Pro installed on a FAT32 Partition. Its a fresh installation with no new programs installed. It takes almost 30 seconds to shutdown. This seems abnormal to me since I have observed in general that it normally takes less than 10 seconds. What could be the possible problem(s)? I have checked the Task Manager and Device Manager and find no "Not Responding" processes or "Device Conflicts"... I have also tried many of the solutions listed in Microsoft TechNet, but the issue still prevails. Please advise, Thanks, Ed. |

Hey
This could be a result of some reasons. Your HD fragmentation is high. Your XP registry file is a mess. You computer spec are low (old HD, low memory). It's hard to tell... try to give more details about your computer and what you do have installed on it. _____________ "Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life". I still haven't sorted out the problem yet. Here are some details:
-The system config is: +Pentium 4 2.40B Processor with 512Kb cache +Hynix 256 MB DDR-RAM +Intel GEBV2 Motherboard (firmware update done recently is P.17 i believe) +APC UPS 500VA AVR-Pro (Going strong for the past 3 years) -I had the HDD connected to another mbd when I did the Windows installation.Does that have anything to do with it.Anyway I reinstalled all the drivers from the intel CD once I connected it to my PC. -I did a firmware update, but the problem existed from the time the Windows installation was complete. -There was no hardware connected to the machine when the installation was done and the problem started from the time the installation was complete. -I have an external D-Link 56Kbps Data/Fax/Voice Modem. I had some issues with installing the driver. I assume it was listed in Dev Mgr as "Conexant...". I had to download the driver from the website. It did not even detect the driver automatically nor from the CD that came along with it. -I have Windows XP Pro and have faced issues with SP2 and ended up installing Windows XP with no Service Packs. -I cannot think of another reinstall cos I have spent most of my free time setting up the system. The HDD (Samsung PUMA 80GB 7200RPM) is almost 3 years old and I have been careful enough and have formatted the C Drive just 4 times till date ![]() -The system is real fast but the shutdown takes around 30 seconds...which is too long. I do not get any errors or the system does not freeze whatsoever, but takes its time to shut down... -I have been doing a lot of research till date, but could not still come up with a valid conclusion. I would appreciate any help from you guys, Thanks. |

No guarantees but some things to consider. MS Updates/Service Packs do more than provide security corrections. Often times they fix flaws in an OS that can cause lock-ups, errors or slow shut down and/or start up. I always recommend fully updating an OS. When a system shuts down, it first has to terminate any running programs and services. I use Black Viper's guides to Disable unnecessary Services on both 2000 and XP machines. Also, take a look in run>msconfig>Start Up tab and see what programs are set to run at start up. Uncheck any that are unnecessary. Some may be required for certain hardware to fully function so use this guide to decide which to not allow on start up. http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Moving hard drives from one machine to another can be done successfully, but on fresh installs I always do the formatting and installation of the os when the hard drive is installed on the machine where it will be running. Why create the possibility of hardware/driver conflicts? Black Viper's site is down again so here's an archived link of his guide to XP Services: http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm Last edited by Panama Red; 09-29-2005 at 08:11 AM. |

If you are confident enough you can alter the "KILLSERVICE" value in the registry to shut down XP faster and then research why your machine is taking so long to shut down.
Have you done all the usual virus and malware scans? Why have you formatted the hard drive FAT32?

Hi..Is FAT32 not recommended? Anyway I have plans to convert it to NTFS using the built-in OS utility..Will that be of any help..As far as I know, no virus, malware exists on the PC. I never had an issue with Win ME that was on the C: Drive before I chose Win XP Pro.

I have seen that a machine with a network connection will take about 30 sec. vs. a machine without one shuts down much faster..

Its a standalone machine with only a D-Link External Modem. There are no other external devices connected to it. Still wondering why this is happening...

See here http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/i...?showtopic=180, you can download a service from MS that is supposed to help with slow shutdowns.
