XP home SP2 update

I would like to update a WinXP SP1 to SP2 without an internet connection on that computer. I downloade the file from Microsoft, but when I double click on it, it extracts to a folder it makes, then in a few seconds, the folder disappears. I guess that's not how it's supposed to be done. Could someone tell me how or if I can do this please.

Hi,

just to be sure, your downloaded file is around 260 MB, right ?

You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

That's correct 266mb it says.

Is it supposed to run on it's own to install, by double clicking on it, once it's downloaded?

Yes. You double click on it, then it'll be decompressed and the Windows XP SP2 Setup wizard will appear.

Since you said it doesn't work like that, try this:

Create a folder and copy the big SP2 file to it (just copy, keep the original file for a backup somewhere else)
Open the command prompt, change to that folder and (assuming the file's name is "SP2.exe") type: SP2.exe -x
and confirm the target path (will be the current directory).
After the SP2 is decompressed, go to the "update" subfolder and doubleclick on "update.exe". That will bring up the setup wizard also.

If it doesn't work either I'd slipstream it and do a clean install.

Thanks RJ,

That all worked just like you said, except I had to do the update in Safe Mode. I think there's still a virus in the computer giving me problems. I'm working on that still. If I had the original XP disc I think I would have done a clean install. We do have it, just not here today.
