problem installing windows xp home edition

my buddy recently has been trying to reformat his moms computer but we can't seem to figure out how to install windows xp. i managed to reformat the c drive through dos using some old recovery disk, but now when we insert the windows disk it'll get through the majority of the process right before you have the option to reformat the drive through windows setup. the error reads something like "please make sure the windows cd is in the drive, windows cannot be found please verify the disk is in the drive.. etc." i've cleaned the disk, and considering the computer boots from the windows cd, it's reading the disk.

any help?

thanks

Did you use a boot disk, some old pc's requires boot disk to load new OS. BTW it gave me the same error, when i was formating and reinstalling some 98. use boot disk and it will work.

I had this same problem with a customer's computer recently and it turned out to be a bad CD ROM drive. It would read for a while and then not read, at roughly the same point yours is stopping.
