File problem in XP
Hi folks
When I try to rename, delete etc. a file I keep getting an error in XP/SP2 that says... "Cannot rename [filename]: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. This happens quite often from time to time and I often have to reboot to fix the problem. It usually happens after closing the program that was using the file. I even waited for a while before rebooting and tried again and still got the same error. There is no open program holding the file unless something in the background is causing the problem that I am not aware of. Any help appreciated. Thanks Dave |

The shortest answer is to get an external program, something like Move on Boot (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html)
Why it's happening is probably because of the nature of the file. Usually, files like large AVIs, for example, get "read" in Windows explorer just when you select it to delete. Even if you dont use it in a media player, Windows explorer, tries to check some basic details of these files - for example, the duration, any titles, generate any thumbnails etc etc. If the file is rather large, this takes time and "locks" it up preventing further action. Sometimes it helps not to use Windows explorer at all to delete the file, but to use the command line interface. |
