Internet Explorer 6 Problem
I am encountering a strange problem with IE6 on Windows XP Pro SP2, whilst trying to sell something on Ebay.co.uk.
When I get to the Ebay sell item page and click the “Continue” button, which would normally lead on to the process of listing the item, the IE6 window simply closes down without any warning; (screen shots at : http://www.rossua.pwp.blueyonder.co....oblem/pics.htm) I have the following additional information on the problem :- Works OK on a laptop machine (running IE6 on XP Home SP2). Works OK on same machine dual-booted to Win98SE and with a dial-up connection. Works OK on same machine (in XP Pro SP2) with different browsers ie. Mozilla, Netscape, and Opera. Still occurs when logged on as different user. Still occurs on www.ebay.com. Still occurs when XP Firewall switched off. Still occurs after SP2 uninstalled and then re-installed. Still occurs after turning off IE6 pop-up blocker. I am running out of things to try. I have done a virus check (AVG anti-virus & Trend Online), and Spyware check (S&D and Lavasoft Adaware), which detected some problems and fixed them. I have also cleared cookies and temporary files of every kind (using Ccleaner). I am wondering if I could uninstall and re-install IE6, using Add/Remove Programs, but deselecting IE in Windows Components and trying to uninstall it does not seem to remove it. I have also run sfc to check the system files and no errors were reported. Is this possibly just a bug in XP or SP2, as I’ve heard SP2 in particular can be problematical. Would booting from XP CD to re-install XP be the only way around this problem ? I have tried “in-place XP install” from the XP Pro CD, to repair the system, but it reports it cannot do anything as the currently installed XP is a newer version. Are there any repair procedures for IE6 I could follow ? Please can anyone make any suggestions as I’ve been happy enough using IE as a web browser until now. The only time I’ve noticed anything similar is if running up IE with the cable modem switched off, IE unceremoniously closes down, rather than displaying the normal “Page Not Found” error page. This no longer happens now after the above changes I’ve made. I cannot use System Restore as my restore points are all deleted after the above procedures. Thanks in advance for any help. Ross

Have you run any virus or anti-spyware programs? Such as AVG and Ad-aware?

Yes I have run AVG anti-virus, Trend Online Anti-Virus, Search&Destroy Spyware Checker, and Lavasoft Adaware. These detected some problems and fixed them. I have also cleared all cookies and temporary files of every kind using the CCleaner program.
However the IE problem will just not go away. Is there no way to just start again and re-install IE6 from scratch ? |
