Help! PC locks up when idle or burning DVD
Ok, so I really don't know what else to do. I built a pc and it runs good but, occasionally it will lock up on me out of the blue. More consistantly though, it always locks up after of couple of hours left idle.
Components: ASUS A8N-SLI Delux Mobo VGA XFX FG6800 GT 256MB video card (one only) Xclio 480W PSU AMD 64 3700+ Athlon 939pin DDR CRSR 512MB (qty 4) NEC Floppy Seagate 250G hard drive SATA (qty 2 but only one installed) Liteon DVD +/-RW Liteon DVD ROM running Windows XP with all the upgrades Originally I had the two seagate HDs in a raid 0 but it lost the OS frequently. After a hard reboot it would find it again. I figured it was a problem with the Silicon raid driver. I then reformatted and did a raid 1 thinking it would be more stable. My performance went in the toilet. I used performance test software and my HDs were lower than any bench mark. Thinking I had a HD going bad, I uninstalled one (which I could do bc both drives were mirrored) and the performance went way up. However, the performance went way up on both drives individually. So again, I assume it was a problem with the raid driver. Now, I'm running one drive and the performance is better. However, the system locks up after an hour or so of being left idle. Also, I can't burn DVD movies without it locking up, unless I use the burn main movie only option in Clone DVD. It's like it just can't process all the information because when I shrink it down to the main movie, it will work. My next step is to continue running one drive, and update the BIOS. I'm on Pheonix Tech Version 1008, they are up to version 1013. Does anyone have any thoughts that may help? I'm running out of options and ideas. Also, when updating the BIOS it warns to update the chipset driver first. I can download the driver, but how do I install it? It has an RAS file type and just sits in the folder....not sure how to attach it to the chipset. You guys were a big help when I built this thing, so thank you for that. I'm sort of new to all this... Jeff |

Problem Discovered....solution in the works
Looks like the problem is memory related. I ran memtest86 and got one failed address. I took out all the memory sticks but one and it works fine. However, I used memtest86 on all sticks individually and got no errors. Working with asus to resolve the issue....
