SP2 Known to Cause This?

I installed SP2 on my laptop and my secondary computer some time ago using the free CD I ordered from M$. No problems there.

Finally got around to doing it on my main system, but I used the online Windows Update to do it (only because I could do it online w/ new DSL... )

Now this comp has spontaneously gone into sleep mode 3 or 4 different times in the last several days following the SP2 install. The monitor instantly swithches to sleep mode, the tower is still running, but no activity and no response. Can't find a way to wake it up when it does this. Power button won't work to shut it down, but the reset button will work.

This has been a stable build for several years. PSU is new Antec 480 and has been solid for a couple months.

Is this an SP2-typical problem? Should I go back to the restore point previous to the install to see? Is that going to be problematic? Thx.

Have you looked into the Power options in Control panel?

Seems to be set the same as it was before SP2. Monitor after 10 mins, Turn Off Hard Disks and System Standby are both set to Never. What else might I look for there? Any other thoughts?

Set the monitor to Never and save profile to Always On. I expect that your monitor shuts down and you have not assigned a hotkey to wake it up. Also, a question. When you say the power button will not shut it down, do you hold the power button depressed for four seconds? This most ALWAYS hard boots a machine.

How do you set the hotkey? Just moving the mouse woke it up before. If I set it to Never, does that mean I'll have to manually turn off the monitor when done working, I guess?

Dunno if I held the button for 4 seconds. Since the reset button worked, I just use that when it freezes up...

I haven't installed some of the optional updates on the Windows site. There are some hardware and software ones I was wary of, but should I try installing them as well?

In this configuration, the monitor would go to standby mode beings there is no video signal. Most modern monitors just periodically flash power light. there is MINIMAL power utilized.
As far as the hotkey assignments, they vary where they are located. Some are software controlled, but most assignments can be made in BIOS setup.

Well, at the risk of jinxing myself by speaking too soon, I think I may have gotten worried over a rookie mistake... I uninstalled my video drivers and reinstalled the latest version, and I haven't had an issue since. Hopefully that was it!
