Problem with running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

I have a Toshiba Techra 8000 notebook that is currently running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. My previous employer allowed me to keep the notebook for my personal use. The notebook was previously used in a network setting but I wanted to use it at home for internet surfing and email. When I tried to connect to my DSL provider at home, the provider's technician told me that Windows NT 4.0 would not allow me automatically obtain an IP address. When I contacted my previous employer, they had me remove the domain as it appeared that my system was still trying to access the network. Now I can no longer access the hard drive on my notebook because I can't get pass the logon screen. I have tried several passwords but without any success. I would like to access the hard drive to see what data is there before I try to install a different operating system, probably Windows 95. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
