Did you just update the drivers? If yes, did it work after for a time. Do you have any info from your device manager? (Control Panel>System>Device Manager)
Did you install the correct drivers?
More Info Please.

couple of things to check:
1. in the volume control make sure the "mute all" box does not have a tick in it.
2. Is the speaker jack plug actually plugged into the right point in the soundcard?

I speak from experience!!!

I have to ask this because I have seen this WAY to many times, you do have the speakers plugged into the right port. The reason I ask is that I have seen too many people take their systems home, complain that the sound isn't working and bring it back to my shop. I check it out and it works fine. They take it home, phone me up again, tear a strip off me a mile wide because it doesn't work, storm into the store, tear another strip off me, only to find out that they were plugging the speakers into the speaker jack of the modem instead of the sound card.

So it might be an insulting question (not intended that way), but please double check that you have the speakers plugged into the sound card (if you have on board sound and have disabled it to add a new card, make sure you're plugged into the new card and not the on board controller) and that you are plugged into the right socket on the card.

Are the Speakers still working? Plug in a set of walkman headphones into the plug on the card and see if you can hear anything.

Something just dawned on me. This is an on-board sound. (built into the motherboard and not a seperate card, you can tell if the game port and speaker plugs are up next to the printer port and serial ports)
Have you went into the BIOS Setup and checked to see if the on-board sound is enabled? If it is, and it should be if it is detected, disable it restart and the check the device manager to see if it is gone. The run the BIOS setup again and re-enable it.

So it is a seperate sound Card. The only thing I Can think of now is to reload the drivers. (I had some trouble with the drivers on a Friends C-Media Onboard card)
When you reloaded the drivers did did you follow the readme that was in the C-Media Zip?
When I had the problem with the friends computer, I had to go and reinstall the drivers by pointing the window driver install to the C-Media folder on C.
You can try this, but if the device manager doen't show any errors, then it is starting to look like the sound card is dead.

Also, at the C-Media website in the FAQ section under the first question there is a bunch of comments about patches for their drive update.
If it is the sound card, don't buy another c-media product.

Hi morriswindgate..

I agree with you i really think that my sound card is dead.

Firstly when i downloaded sounddriver it was a win zip so i just used the unzip, so i didnt have to go into MSDOS.

I looked at the driverpatches but im not familiar with msdos commands and it tells me to self extract really dont know were to start.

I am thinking of getting new sound card from creative lab sound blaster live '''

What would i have to buy that would be compatiable with my pc and can i place the new sound card were the old sound card was fitted.

My PC 350 mmx pentium 11 windows 98

thanks

As long as you have a PCI (White Colored)Slot you can use just about any card.
The Sound Blaster Live series are good cards, But I hate the on-screen interface. Sound Blasters have the name recognition.
The Turtle Beach Montego II (2 Speaker support) or the Montego II Quadzilla are excellant sound cards with an excellant software package and support. And they are less expensive than the Blasters.
Diamond Multimedia Monster is pretty good also and easy to set-up. (That is all the cards are easy to install and setup, but this one is easier)
If it got down to my opinion, I would go with the Montego II, but I like the sound they get.

One other thing, I never update the Drivers on the sound card, unless their are compatability problems with an upgrade I do. Most of the time these upgrades don't seem to improve what you got and most upgrades for sound cards are directed toward newer Operating systems. (Like when ME and 2K came out)

Hi morriswingate

I tried my head phones at the back no sound then i tried my headphones at the front of CDROM and i can hear my music cd playing.

Im not sure why it works at the front and not and the back of my tower does that mean on board sound ok but the sound card is dead.

When you say white slots the cmedia sound card is on the gold brown what ever and i think i do have white slots just above there.

Im not sure were to fit new card and what procedures to take are they as simple as just fit the sound cards play alright

Are plug and play ive been told that they are easy to fit is that correct
.
can you help
