Win XP SP2 problems

Hello, I just got a new hard drive and installed Windows XP with SP2 already implemented. When setup was completed and my PC restarted to logon to Windows, it froze at the Windows XP logo screen. I restarted again and everything went fine. I installed different drivers (motherboard, mouse, monitor, etc) using their CDs, and a few restarts later, Win XP suddenly took forever to boot up. What normally took about 30 seconds from restart to being logged in to Windows now takes 90 seconds.

I did some research and found out that some Prescott processors may have troubles with SP2. Here's my processor and motherboard:

Processor: Intel P4 3.0 GHz Prescott
Motherboard: ASUS P4P800SE
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

A lot of the solutions posted suggested to uninstall SP2, but I can't. I assume only those who upgraded to SP2 from SP1 can, but in my case, SP2 came with my first installation of Windows.

Another problem is I cannot setup my internet connection (DSL) even after going through the new internet connection wizard. I'm on a router, so I don't need to establish a dial-up connection. Also, Internet Explorer acts very strange. When I type in a website, it asks me if I want to save the file. For example, if I type in www.google.com, a popup asks me if I want to open or save the file "google."

I'm currently reinstalling Windows XP Pro with SP2 (I'm on a different computer) and I hope things are better. What's going on? :S

If the same problems come up after this reinstall, I'll do another reinstall but this time with Windows 2000.

Please help.

sometimes when you update windows (or other programs) the computer needs to be restarted and during this reboot the updates are implemented.
this takes some time and could explain why the reboot took a long time.

dunno about the other stuff.

sp2 always has taken a long time for the first reboot, the first time i did it I thought it was broken and almost reset the computer because it had a blank screen for such a long time, but waited instead and then all came on normal,
it is normal for the first time, after that it was much faster
it was the same on several other systems too, so its nothing to worry about.

It actually was a problem, because after the re-install, everything went fine. I don't know what happened the during the first installation, but after I reinstalled WinXP, all the problems I mentioned above were gone. Everything's fine now
