xp x64 start up kind of slow

Hi.
I am running xp x64 and it seems like during start up, after all the icons load and after the welcome sound, it takes too long (longer than I think should) for everything to load (i.e. all the icons in the right hand corner next to clock. Things like windows update icon) and during this long wait, I can't even get in to system manager. When I double click the system manager icon. It sits there for a minute and finaly opens.

What's wrong with this?
How do I fix it?

XP 64 is notoriously badly supported by manufacturers, and therefore, drivers are hard to come by.

Were you able to find the necessary chipset drivers for your motherboard/graphics card? Are there any exclamation marks in device manager?

Have you done a thorough malware sweep, including virus and spyware scans?

The support cd motherboard came with had all the necessary drivers.
This system is new and hasn't been connected to the internet.

I have Pentium D 3.0ghz
Asus P5LD2Deluxe
1ghz ram

Honestly, just because there are drivers, doesn't necessarily mean that they are designed very well. However, that is something you can't really diagnose effectively. The first thing I would do is disable everything unnecessary for booting your system, kinda like running it in safe mode but in a regular mode. For example, if you've got network, disable all of it .. especially if you've got WiFi. If you've got an antivirus disable it.. etc.
Check your system services to see any 3rd party services booting up with the system, try setting it on manual or disable it and see if it works.
Now try enabling them a block at a time and see if it helps.
