Windows Explorer "work Offline" message
My OS is win98SE.
While online the other day, I also opened my windows explorer. Now, whenever I am offline, every first time I call up either windows explorer or my computer, I get the "no connection to the internet" message. Where do I find the windows setting to stop this message box from re-appearing? |

I had a similar problem, when I tried to open a Internet browser on a Windows 98 machine for a client of mine.
You might be able to find some info on the Microsoft support website. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;303346 This link helped me with the problem I had. |

Try turning off Web content in your folder options. |

"work offline" message still appears
I removed all web content from folder options. I set folder options to classic view. I made the microsoft registry changes suggested above, two entries changed from "yes" to "auto". Re-boot to same condition.
I see a checkmark against "work offline" in the windows explorer file menu dropdown. Exiting windows explorer and re-entering brings back the work-offline message box, as if the PC just forgets the settings. Is there a way to repair windows explorer without re-installing windows? |

I haven't seen this error myself, but it seems there are quite a few mentions of it around the Internet.
One thing that some threads mention: make sure to rule out any malware at work. I'd recommend at visit to HouseCall's new scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com It can scan for both viruses and spyware. You may need to allow the download of an Active X contol for it to work - it should be OK & be digitally signed by TrendMicro. It's a nicely thorough scan, and is very up-to-date. If you want to try the repair IE angle: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ System Information. . . and from the "Tools" menu, choose "repair IE" -- and if you do repair, then visit Windows Update for Security Patches. Did you turn off Active Desktop? (if you don't really need it, that is). Hope it's working again soon - . . . Gary Last edited by GaryRouth; 09-16-2005 at 02:14 AM. |

"work offline" message
Thanks Gary!
I tried the repair IE in sys info. I got a message that IE5.5 could not be repaired. Details said a file was out of date. I looked for an update for IE 5.5 but found IE6 at Microsoft site and installed it: problem fixed! |
