A64 has picked up the crashing bug

Ive been getting inconvenient crashes from my A64 build lately. It will only crash when a certain action is performed, although what action it chooses to crash on seems to be a mystery to me. although one program it typically likes to crash on is an audio recording program called n-track. So lets get some of the obvious checks out of the way: I checked the cpu temps and voltage levels. the CPU doesnt go more than 40 - 42C on full load, and the voltages are rock solid. This is a fresh installation of Windows XP, so its not like any registry tweaks or system changes are prevalent. To me i get the impression that the system is having difficulty dealing with things with a higher load. Im planning on memtesting the RAM, heck even the hdd for the sake of diagnosing. If anyone has any thoughts, id be happy to entertain those ideas

EDIT: Ok, an update. I tried running memtest, but the system would just reboot whenever it tries to boot from the cd. Im beginning to lean on faulty RAM, any thoughts?

TIA,
CN

Assuming you have more than one stick, have you tried testing just a stick at a time? Also, you can use a floppy mem tester, too. I'd also uninstall n-track and see if that clears you problem up as it could be a software issue, too.

That could be a problem but I have the same issue with my 64 bit processor and I checked the ram and it was fine I was told on another forum that my power supply wasnt strong enough I had a Thermal Take 480w and it was causing the freeze, it worked fine in my athlon xp build so I borrowed a bigger psu from a friend for 3 days up no problems so you may look into that also.

alright, im gonna try the floppy memtest and see if that works, and also test both sticks individually. the PSU Im using is a zalman 300W noiseless psu. Is that too weak for an a64 build?

TIA,
CN

Could be a PS problem, but that would be the last thing I'd check. I run only a 400W Antec with my 3500+64 with 4 mem sticks, 5 HDDs, 2 - 3 burners (I keep swapping them around), and a X800xt, and an Audigy with a Live drive, and I don't exibit similar problems.

well ive done a memtest and after 1 pass i get no errors, so RAM has been struck off the list. all I can think of now is a problem in windows, the PSU or some other hardware. the ntrack program is where the crashes happen mostly, but its not the only place, while uninstalling winamp, it also happened. even just by opening a folder on rare occasions it reboots, thats the kind of thing thats take me away from the thought that its the PSU. one other thought is that I installed an m-audio audiophile 192 card, and at the beginning had a shaky installation. for the most part it seemed to be working fine, so I dunno whether to put it down the list of possible suspects.

TIA,
CN

Do you have "Automatic Restart" turned off? It's under System Properties (Hit Ctrl+Pause), then the Advanced tab, then Settings in the Startup and Recovery section, and the check box is in the middle, System Failure section. Turning that off can give clues to random crashes / restarts...

Well I think the problem lies in my sound card driver. I did turn off auto restart, and those restarts become xp bsod's pointing to 'delta.sys' which is the driver file for my delta AP 192 audio card. I think the error message was "DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or something like that. Ive tried fully reinstalling the drivers, but now windows completely freezes whenever I select any of the menu's in n-track...how messed up can it get?!

Nah, I tried a bunch of stuff, but uninstalling the sound drivers was more than a pain. I ended up blowing away the system and reinstalling windows. Not like it was much of a problem, I recently did that anyway, so i didnt have anything to lose. But now it works fine. This time I directly installed updated drivers for my sound card!
