SLOW start up and SLOW shut down - XP/home

Have Toshiba SATELLITE A65 - my windows xp came with the laptop and doesn't have "start up" in the system. It takes about three (3) minutes to boot up and about the same to shut down. How can I program these functions to work faster (as it did when I first got the laptop)

umm u could scan uer computer, defrag it weekly if not bi-weekly (2x a week) run anti-virus/spyware software like AVG, SEarch and Destroy. Also do disk clean up and remove all unnecessary files. tHere are techniques in Registry that u can apply but i wont recommend, by there is a key in there that shuts down computer and i do think it was mentioned in pcstats "101 tips and tweaks to fasten XP" scroll all the way to the bottom and look at these great tricks

You could also uninstall programs that you dont need, CCleaner is a good utility which cleans out the crap. As true_ks said, run updated scans, besides Spybot, would also recommend Adaware. And ofcourse a defrag will help improve boot. Lack of sufficient Memory can also be a reason.

Regular defrag will help speed up your computer speed, bootup and startup. Here's a tip from Microsoft that shows you how to speed up your computer.
