Very frustrating
After about an hour of Interneting, things start to slow down to the point where pictures, or even web sites, or even my home page won`t load. I am using cable Internet, with XP home. It seems to have started when I had to get a new modem. Is there a way with out getting a new modem to check and see what is wrong. Even if I stay here at pcmech forum after about an hour pages won`t load. I have to shut my pc down, even some times I have to turn off the modem then boot back up to be able to surf. Just wondering if I can check something to see what can be going on or should I just get another modem? Thanks for any help.

tools--internet options--general tab--temporary internet files--settings--You can move the slider to the right to increase the size of the cache available for files. Also dump the files regularly. tools--internet options--general tab--delete files-check the box for delete all offline content--hit ok. also on the settings tab check "check for newer versions of stored pages" check "never". Also run disc cleanup and defragment your hard drive. Go to C-windows-prefetch and delete everything in the folder, but not the folder, and reboot. !st reboot will be a little slow because some applications will be replacing files in prefetch, but a lot of the junk that accumulates there will be gone. Also there is a definite possibiliity you have spyware/adware or other garbage like that. Run spybot search and destroy, adaware SE and do a virus scan. If the problem persists call the cable company and tell them you need to know the proper settings for your modem. If the settings are O.K., tell them to come change the modem.
