Sign on to computer
I just installed a new HP printer/copier/scanner. No problem there, however now when I start the computer I get a screen where I have to click on my name to logon. Since I am the only one using this computer, I want it to boot right up, with me having to click on my name. I went into User accounts, but could not get it back to where it was before. I never set up any password either. Using Windows XP Pro. Thanks in advance, Mike

Hi bailey, Thanks for the reply. I do click on my name, ad it does continue loading, but I did not have to do that step before.
Additional info--before I installed that HP printer, I was trying that "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" It got about half way through, and I deceided to Cancel. That probably messed something up rather than installing the printer ?? |

You should be able to go into user accounts if you have administrator priveleges and delete the account. It IS a good idea to have a password protected user account, however.
If you do not, any attacker who connects to your system is in, immediatley. Using a password protected account makes it (at the very least) a bit more difficult for hackers. -Kev

macko72--that box is already unchecked. I will also search that link you sent,
but when I checked on a few items that sounded like it MIGHT help, I was required to download the info. I might still try some of the items that seem promising. kev7555--the instructions say the administrator can not delete his own account. But I did not know that setting up a password to get into the computer would make it a bit more secure. Thanks for the tip. If I now have to click on my name to contibue logging on, I might as well type a password in also. It was nice before, because I would turn on the computer when I can home from work and then go change clothes. When I came back the computer was ready to go. I would still like to get it back like before if any one can figure it out. |

When you go to the User Accounts control panel, how many accounts are there? Is the guest account turned off?

jayb1234---did not try system restore yet. That is an option.
zelira---there are three accounts there. (1) MJW, computer admin. (2) Guest, guest acct. is off. (3) ASP.NET Machine A... Limited access, password protected. I have no idea what that third one is all about. |

In my machines, I had that something.net account also. I never figured out why it was there so I deleted it. That way there was only one possible account to log in as, bypassing that user account screen. I don't know the damage from deleting it. User beware...
