Emergency Situation to Recover Files

I currently am trying to recover all of my files offf of my Dell Latitude D600 running Windows XP. It has been acting very bad recently, giving me the dreaded blue screen of death the past few months. Well finally over the last few days, it's been running erratic and I was in the process of burning key files to CD.

Now, I cannot get in XP at all. I either get disk read errors or boot drive errors at startup. Every once in a while, I'm able to get to the windows login screen, but it sits there when trying to load my settings. I tried installing a fresh copy of XP on my other hard drive, but it says it must wipe clean my main hard drive first. When I try to repair my Windows installation, I'm able to get into that DOS Prompt-type screen and I can see the directories still on my hard drive and the amount of space they occupy. But when I try to get into those directories, I get an "Access is Denied" message. Does anyone know how I can recover these files?

In these situations, I use Knoppix. Download and burn Knoppix onto a CD, and boot from the CD. Since it runs off of the CD, the state of the hard drive doesn't matter. If the hard drive can still be read to, you can then pull whatever files you need off and put them onto a USB drive.

When I look at Knoppix, it's program is 695MB. Is there a CD large enough to contain that much information?

Sure, 700 MB CDs are large enough.

My mistake. I don't know why I was thinking 70MB and not 700MB. This has definitely been too frustrating. But another question I did have is that if I am able to get to my files using this method, is there any way to recover my Outlook messages this way? I have hundreds of important emails that I need almost as much as the work files on that Laptop.

Yes, you can get the e-mails if they are there. Look for .PST files. Take a look at this: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000457.htm#05

Hi lilpenny1316

We use the D600 at work although that is now superseeded by the D610, the most quickest method would be to remove the hard drive and slave it to a desktop PC. Undo a couple of screws and slide the drive out. You can buy the connector (a few dollars at the most) that allows you to slave it using an IDE cable. I've carried out this procedure many times for clients who are unable to get into windows for one reason or another. You can then copy all data required refit the hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of XP.

Knoppix is a bootable linux live cd and invaluable in situations like yours. If you don't have a usb storage device, knoppix includes a cd burning program called "k3b" which looks a lot like nero and is very user friendly.

Hi DougL,

You know, I was wondering if that was possible. I started removing the screws on the laptop, but then I figured that wasn't possible. But now that you've mentioned it, I think I will give that a shot.

Thanks!

When you do take the drive out you have to very carefully remove the end connection otherwise it will not fit on the IDE connector. I use some small pilers to gently prise it off.

I have been able to pull the drive out of the laptop and remove the end connection. I have tried setting up the drive as a slave, but when I go in the system BIOS, it does not recognize the new drive or my existing hard drive. I have set up my original drive as the master and I believe I have the laptop drive set up as the slave. No diagram came with it, but I have tried setting the jumper in every possible setting, except diagonal. It is a Hitachi Travelstar 40GB Model: HTS548060M9AT00

I still know the files are still on there, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing.

Nevermind. Apparently this hard drive is in bad shape, but I was able to finally get my PC to recognize this hard drive. The hard drive is recognized by the laptop and now the PC sparingly, so I assume that the drive is going bad rapidly. Thank you to everyone for your help. And DougL, big thank you goes out to you.
