Can't LOGIN to XP Home????
We've been gone away from PC for a month. Before we left - I built
a new PC with a new Pentium 4 MB and new Intel cpu. Installed WINDOWS XP HOME - all was well THEN! Came back today - and system will not let us login to either my "account" or my wifes? When we hit the "Fred" user-button, for a brief second or 2 - it attempts to bring up XP for me - but then immediately "LOGS OUT". If we attempt to login to XP with my wife's icon - it does the same? It's like something has locked us out of XP HOME???? Help Fred Spring Hill, FL

As long as you didn't encrypt your files you can boot up with a linux LiveCD Distro and replace the passwords in the same file to log in. I will not explain how to do this for legal purposes. Another way, which in my opinion is easier and worth a try, is to insert the XP Home CD into the optical drive, boot from it, and run a repair of the operating system. Don't install a new copy over yours, that will erase all your program files, just do a repair. More information about how to do this here. Data loss can still occur, but with almost any repair operation you take a risk of losing "something"...or so I think...

at the login screen press Ctrl Alt Del twice in succession, change the username to administrator, when you built the system it would have asked you to put a password in for the Administrator account, if you left it blank then just hit the enter key. Once in you can reset the account details for your wife and yourself.

TaaaDaa ...... !
Doug, Sniper20
I was ABLE (!) to "repair" Windows XP HOME late last nite. And it worked! While on vacation, house/cable lines/AC looks like it took a lightning hit from storms. It took out RoadRunner cable modem, and my surge box. I don't know how this could have been sensed by XP ..... who knows. All is back on line .... and this retiree, can have fun again. Perhaps a new MB, as I'm told this 5 month old one I used for build in 5/2005 - was a dud. It dies once in a while - needs full repowerdown/up. Thanks again for your(s) help! Fred O Spring Hill, FL |
